We pride ourselves on our ability to combine 200 years of age-old techniques and experience in the wool industry with our passion for sustainable, renewable fibres. The responsibly sourced wool used in our luxurious yarn comes from sheep that roam freely on the fells and downs of the British Isles and thrive on a simple blend of grass, water, fresh air and sunshine. Every year they are sheared in the Spring months - an essential part of good farming husbandry - which helps rid them of potentially damaging infections such as blowfly strike and keeps them cool during the summer months. To celebrate the natural qualities of our pure wool, our yarn range also includes natural undyed colours, spun using the original colours of British wool pure breeds. At a time of increasing concern about the future of our planet and the exhaustion of its resources, it is vital that we use naturally occurring materials such as pure wool. If correctly treated, this high quality material will reward the wearer with many years of comfort - and at the end if its lifetime it is fully degradable making it an ideal sustainable and environmentally friendly product. Care of the environment features strongly in our strategic planning and we are selective in our supplier base by choosing to work only with companies that have a sound ecological footprint. Vicuña wool is the most expensive textile in the world. And it’s exceptionally difficult to come by. This ultrasoft material is harvested from its namesake, the elusive vicuña, a cousin to llamas and alpacas. It can only be gathered once every two years, when indigenous communities in the Andes Mountains work with the government and conservation organizations to corral the animals, shear them, and release them back into the wild. Only then can the wool be shipped around the world and made into coats that can cost over $30,000. This shearing process must be delicately executed by skilled experts, so as to keep the vicuña population thriving in their natural habitat. So what does it take to corral the vicuñas? And what makes its wool so expensive? Pocket Square Classic White Irish Linen - 🤍 3. Pink Mini Carnation Silk Boutonniere - 🤍 4. Eagle Claw Cufflinks with Carnelian Balls - 🤍 Generally speaking, worsted wool is the most popular fabric for men's suits around the world and while there are technically many fabrics that fall into the definition of worsted, there are subtle differences in classification among them. One of these determining factors is the wool's so-called super number. You may be familiar with seeing terms like super 120s or super 180s on online retail pages or in fabric swatch books but what exactly does the term super mean in relation to worsted wool? Before we can answer that question, let's talk a bit more generally about what qualifies as worsted wool. The term worsted can alternately describe either a combed yarn, a fabric made from a combed yarn, or a weight of yarn. A combed yarn, by the way, is made when wool fibers are rotated by metal combs that align the long fibers while discarding these short staple fibers. The result is a long lasting fine and smooth yarn with a somewhat glossy finish. Also, by adjusting the pull of these combs on the wool, one can get lighter or heavier yarns whereas varying the twists will impact the look, feel, and strength of the yarn. Tight twisting provides a crisper feel whereas loose twisting makes for a softer but weaker yarn. To answer another general question, is a lighter worsted wool better than a heavier weight? The answer not necessarily no. Similarly, you might be under the impression that a lighter weight weave is going to be cooler to wear and a heavier weight would be warmer but this isn't always the case either. Something that's heavy but relatively open in its weave like a fresco fabric, for instance, is going to feel much cooler when worn than something that's tightly woven and lighter like a super 150s fabric, for instance. It's important to keep in mind then that a lighter fabric with a higher super number is not a hallmark of better fabric, it just indicates that the fibers used were thinner in diameter. Similarly, the super number doesn't provide any information about the weave or how heavy the fabric is. So with standardization systems in place, super still sits as the top designation for how fine a wool may be. With that said, some companies have gotten a little subjective again in exactly how they're grading their super wools. So for example, a super 200s wool from one manufacturer might be a bit different in how fine it is from a super 200s wool from another manufacturer. Things are generally going to be fairly consistent, overall. So a higher super number will mean that a fabric is going to be softer to the touch and generally will feel more like luxurious. Conversely, a lower super number will mean that the cloth is more sturdy and probably warmer. Now you may be wondering, how do these super numbers translate into considerations for wearing? Stated simply, anything with a higher super number is going to be more temperamental and hard to care for over time. The thinner, finer fibers of a wool with a high super number may have an amazing hand which is to say how soft they feel to the touch but they're also going to break down much more quickly than a heftier fiber would. Speaking generally then, it's our opinion that it's best not to get overly caught up in the super numbers of your worsted wool suits. Very good quality suits can be created from wool in the super 100s to super 150s range and even below that, and of course, a suit that is well fitted to the wearer's body is going to look great regardless of what the super number might be or even if it doesn't have one. Conversely, something in a super 180s or super 220s wool is still going to look sloppy if it doesn't fit your frame well.
What does it take to grow the best wool in the world? It takes an Aussie woolgrower. The ingenuity and resilience of Australia’s 60,000-plus woolgrowers ensures they continue to produce an export firmly in demand by international brands looking for circular solutions. Australia is the world’s largest supplier of Merino wool, producing 90 per cent of all wool used for fine apparel. Australian sheep survive and thrive in a diverse climatic country, making this fibre uniquely well-placed to be used in extreme performance apparel such as first-responder kits, and soft enough for use in the neo-natal units to protect our most precious new Australians. Hey! So today I wanted to try something a little different. I've been noticing several people trying "painting with wool" recently and I really wanted to take the chance to give it a try as well. Basically it is just needle felting, but on a flat surface. So you create this kind of fuzzy art piece that's really cool. I am a complete beginner with needle felting, but this was perfect for easing into it. This was a surprisingly easy art project to jump into and learn from scratch. Also, I had a lot of fun and ended up with some super cute little creations. Let's talk about the varying types of wool you'll regularly find on the market today and what's appropriate for historical costuming! There's a lot of different textile options and it can quickly end up confusing, so I'm not only going to break down the definition of each, but we'll look at the textile close up, see how it handles, and even sometimes how it makes up into a finished garment! - Gauze Sheer, soft Space between threads wider to make fabric sheer - Challis Light weight, soft Unstructured and mostly opaque (depending on color) - Crepe Light weight, soft Bumpy texture and matte finish - Jersey Light weight, soft Knit with stretch that is generally opaque (depending on color and stretch amount) - Suitings Broad term for midweight wools that are opaque and trend hard over soft hand - Worsted Midweight, mid to hard hand Any suiting that uses worsted wool threads that will result in a smoother, glossier finish - Tropical Light weight, mid hand Specifically light weight suiting - Super Xs Midweight, mid hand Refers to number of threads packed in and quality of textile. Up to 200s - Flannel Midweight, mid hand Has been fulled to soften one or both sides - Gabardine Midweight (sometimes heavy), mid to hard hand Twill weave that trends towards stiffer depending on weight and thread count - Satin/Sateen Midweight, mid hand Uses satin weave to achieve a glossier side - Silk/Wool Can be many different weaves, but often is a satin weave that has a harder hand - Tweed Mid to heavy weight, harder hand Variegation in colors with a harder, rougher feel - Bouclé Threads are spun with extra loops added that create a lofty finish - Coating General term referring to heavier weight textiles that are best as outerwear or less fitted garments - Melton Heavy, mid to hard hand Twill weave that is fulled - Broadcloth Heavy, mid to hard hand Plain weave that is fulled and good qualities can keep a cut edge. Superfine, Fine, Medium, etc grades applied to discuss quality (not weight) - Serge: Double sided Twill - Kersey: Twill with a fulled side - Stuff: Worsted wool (twill or plain) - Linsey Woolsey: Linen and Wool mix - Camlet: Goat/Silk, Camel/Silk, or later Wool/Silk - Calamanco/Callimanco: Glazed wool Favorite Suppliers 🤍 🤍 🤍 ("faux" fur) 🤍 🖼 Scales: 🤍 🖼 Crimp: 🤍 🖼 Iran: 🤍 🖼 Camlet: 🤍 00:00 Attributes 04:20 Animals 07:18 Wool Terms 12:24 Sheer & Light 15:57 Suitings 20:03 Special Weaves 25:10 Coatings 28:11 Historical 31:48 Modern Socials Instagram: 🤍 Tiktok: 🤍 Patreon: 🤍 🎶Music via Epidemic Sound (🤍)

It sounds crazy but rubbing STEEL WOOL on your WINDSHIELD won't hurt it! Laminated windshield glass is higher on the MOHS scale of hardness than steel wool, so it won't scratch. We'll show you how to improve the clarity of the glass and improve visibility. After a little time goes by, every windshield gets a little hazy. That goes double for autos that are towed right behind a large motorhome. Using our toad (towed car), we show you how to use fine steel wool, Rain-X and Invisible Glass to make your view just a little bit clearer. Although our car's windshield has a lot of little nicks from over a decade of being towed behind our motorhome, we still want to keep it as clear as possible. Regular washing can't remove the fine dirt that gets into the pores of the glass, so we use a little detailer's trick that we learned years ago: 0000 steel wool. While you'd expect that steel wool would scratch the glass, it's exactly the opposite. Just like furniture makers use extra-fine steel wool to rub out the surface of the wood after each coat of stain, it polishes glass the same way. NOTE: We use extra-fine 0000 steel wool in this video. It's EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE, so exercise care in storing and using it. UPDATE: A viewer wrote to say that he experienced some areas of scratching after trying this. I've never heard of it scratching before, so I just did a little Googling, and while there seem to be some people who question using steel wool, others swear by it. Some also think you should never us a razor blade on glass, and others do it all the time. One suggestion was to use wet steel wool (of course it will then rust, so pitch it afterwards). Another mentioned buying something called "Poli-Flex Rubberized Clayblock" for cleaning. Although I cannot guarantee that scratching is impossible, many people who've tried steel wool since seeing this video have been thrilled with the results. Either way, proceed slowly and with caution and at your own risk. The piano music is my own performance of Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag from 1899. WONDERING WHAT'S THE BEST GEAR TO USE ON YOUR RV? Hemp wool and sheep wool are considered to be the “greenest” or most sustainable insulation materials. In this video, we’re going to look at how they are made, their main differences as well as their pros and cons. Link to my Patreon page: 🤍 Chapters 0:00 Introduction 0:17 Hempwool manufacturing 1:50 Sheep wool manufacturing 3:09 R value comparison 3:30 Cost 3:46 Dimensional stability 5:03 Van conversions 5:41 Installation 6:23 Workability 6:56 Noise Reduction Coefficient 7:17 Water repellency 8:39 Fire retardant test 9:50 Environmental impact 11:33 Conclusion The outer layer of the hemp stalk is called bast fiber which has been used for centuries to make ropes, clothing, canvas and sails and now Hemp wool insulation batts. Let’s look at how sheep wool insulation is made. This pendulum swings back and forth to make multiple wool layers. The layers are bonded with a mechanically driven needle punch which stitches them together. Hemp wool is sold by the pallet in various depths and widths. A 2” deep batt has an R value of 7 while a 7.5” deep batt is R28. The R value of sheep wool is exactly the same as hemp wool. A 2” deep batt is R7 and a 5.5” batt is R20. The 5.5” batts will fit in a standard 2x6 stud bay for an exterior wall. 5.5” thick Hemp wool costs $1.95 per sqft while the same sheep wool costs $2.25 per sqft. Just like most insulating products, hemp and sheep wool operate on the insulating property of trapped air between the hemp and wool fibers. As you can tell, hemp is much stiffer, denser and heavier. It bounces back to its original shape after being compressed. Sheep wool on the other hand is very floppy, malleable, soft, lightweight. But the unique thing about wool is that you’re not only relying on trapped air for insulation, but the wool fibers themselves are good insulators. Each fiber is composed of protein molecules or keratin organized into five follicles. Hemp wool friction fits into stud bays on walls and ceilings without any additional fasteners. Sheep wool has to be stapled to walls and fastened with a wire mesh or cables to the ceiling. Hemp is very tough and cannot be easily cut with an xacto knife. You have to use a table saw or a miter saw to get a clean cut. Sheep wool fibers are also surprisingly strong. You need to use a pair of sharp scissors or a proper insulation cutter. Now, for the water repellency test. Hemp absorbed some water, allowed it to pass through to the other side and changed color when wet but it also dried up fairly quickly. It did not lose shape or disintegrate. Sheep wool is very similar to hemp in this aspect. When I poured water over the sample, it did absorb it but did not disintegrate. Sheep wool can also naturally absorb moisture while staying dry and retaining its high insulative properties. Hemp wool is supposed to be a Class A fire retardant but it caught on fire very easily and released a lot of acrid smoke and fumes. On the other hand, sheep wool performed pretty well when lit. The flame didn’t spread even though it turned black and singed. They are very environmentally friendly. The hemp plant requires very little water to grow and process, about a quarter of the water needed for cotton. Hemp wool contains no VOCs or volatile organic compounds. Sheep wool is also very eco-friendly. Wool insulation contains the least embodied energy of any insulation available, half that of cellulose and one-sixth that of mineral wool. They are both excellent eco-friendly alternatives to traditional insulation but they need to be refined. For example, it would be great to use hemp wool as a fire-retardant continuous exterior insulation. Sheep wool either needs to have better dimensional stability or we just use it as loose fill insulation. Let’s face it humans. When it comes to creating raw materials for functional outdoor use, sheep are better than us. By simply hanging around in the outdoors for at least 10 000 years (according to archaeological finds), they have managed to evolve a raw material that has so many functional advantages that it leaves other raw materials in the dust. A material that has been along for that long of course comes with some misconceptions. Today, Johanna and Erik will answer some of the most frequent misconceptions about wool. Wool was once one of New Zealand’s most exported products. But thanks to trade wars and synthetic fabrics, wool prices have plummeted. It’s left farmers with bales of wool they can’t sell and herds they can barely afford to shear. Some farmers are stockpiling wool. Some are turning to forestry and getting out of wool altogether. Business Insider follows the owners of Ruanui Station as they shear their 25,000 sheep and fight to keep New Zealand’s wool industry alive.
