This mega mansion was constructed in 1976 with 6 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms with a massive indoor pool. This place seems to have been abandoned around 2010. It’s is said that the family last to live here were from China who had successful businesses around the area. But somehow they lost it all and had to sell the house. It was then bought by a developer who possibly has plans to demolish the house or remodel. Today it’s sits abandoned with many things left behind! Hopefully this beautiful home can be saved an enjoyed again. There’s really much else we could find out about the family but nonetheless we are ready to show you what’s left! How can we design for future that is can endure climate change? TEDArchive presents previously unpublished talks from TED conferences. Enjoy this unedited talk by Kotchakorn Voraakhom. We made this difficult decision for the TED Archive because we believe that a well-moderated conversation allows for better commentary from more people and more viewpoints. Studies show that aggressive and hateful comments silence other commenters and drive them away; unfortunately, YouTube's comment moderation tools are simply not up to the task of allowing us to monitor comments on so many videos at once. (We'd love to see this change, YouTube.) So for now, if you'd like to comment on this talk, please use Facebook, Twitter or G+ to discuss with your networks.
Focusing on the ideas generated by the GroundLAB collaborative community design studio in Lincoln Trevor looks at how to unlock and re-engage existing leftover, disused and in-between spaces within our dense urban environments. By reimagining these spaces, they become important in their ability to knit the urban and social fabric together, providing access to space for play, including opportunities for social cohesion. Trevor is a design practitioner and academic with extensive experience within the creative fields, using the design studio as a research laboratory for testing and building ideas. His objective is to engage in the transformation of place through built projects, exhibitions, research, and writing. He has a cross-disciplinary approach to design and collaborates with artists, filmmakers, exhibition designers, and makers in the realization of built projects. Trevor`s portfolio to date includes interior design, fabrication, installations, furniture making, film production/set design and buildings. With over a decade of experience in construction and the creative industries, his research investigates topics that range from placemaking, public space, craft and the making of architecture. To subscribe to our monthly newsletter head to 🤍 Set in one of the oldest urban areas of Taipei city and inspired its traditional colours, the team at Republic Design have created a warm and elegant space using tones of earthy reds, grays, and light oak wood. The main design idea was to reduce the walking pathways and partitions between areas in order to create a more open fluid space. Moving the TV, dining, and kitchen areas along the one wall, separating and cleverly concealing the bedroom and bathroom, created a single long pathway in the middle of the apartment. The wall also contains a number of clever, custom made storage solutions including a utility brick wall with pieces that can open and fold up as needed as well as a compact foldable dining table. A mezzanine level, which doubles as a guest room and extra storage, was added to the kitchen ceiling and is accessed via a compact foldable staircase hidden in the ceiling. #smallapartment #architecture #interiordesign Project Name: Taipei's Compact Apartment Conversion Designer: 🤍 Produced by New Mac Video Agency Creator: Colin Chee Director/Camera Operator: Alek Vatagin / T-Media Production Producer: Lindsay Barnard Editor: Yasmin Bright/Jess Ruasol Music: Diagrammatic by Oliver Michael

Join Mark for a homestead discussion live with Rachel Jamison! "As a child my family moved frequently so I never had a garden or animals. Our food came from the store and it was usually the cheapest we could find (the 70 & 80’s economic crisis hit my parents hard). It was my grandfather, trips out west camping, secret places hidden within the confines of our small city, and short stints to country relatives that sparked something inside me I could never shake. If you ask my family, they all knew that small city girl was destined to become a country girl. I developed a voracious reading habit in elementary school. It was then that I discovered Laura Ingalls Wilder, Gwen Frostic, James Audubon, and more. I met my husband in high school, he grew up on a small hobby farm doing 4H, raising animals, gardening, picking fruit, and cutting wood. He lived the life I always dreamed of living. After we got married we lived in a small old trailer outside of town for a few years. Eventually, we saved and purchased 20 acres. It took us 2.5 years to build a cute little house (yes, we did this mostly ourselves), which we then sold (we kinda regret that). It was there that I grew my first tomatoes from some free starts my mother-in-law gave me. We then moved back to town. We were on an acre, it is here my gardening and homesteading journey really started. My mother-in-law taught me to can and my father-in-law taught me about conventional gardening. I started learning to bake and cook from scratch and then a series of health issues and tragedies hit our family. These changed the way we thought about food and farming. During this time we fixed up that house, sold it, and moved to where we currently are on .33 of an acre. I dove head first into alternative health, food, medicine, herbals, gardening, butchering, more preserving, primitive skills, etc… The more I learn about this deep subject the less skilled I feel. I am co-host of The Modern Homesteading Podcast. Please check out our recent episodes." This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. What do baristas and ranchers have to learn from each other? In this inspiring talk, rancher and city-planner Brad Buchanan reveals how he combines these experiences designing spaces helping connect us to each other while preserving the groundedness that comes from access to open spaces. From this design philosophy, Brad sees a cure for urban sprawl. Brad is the executive director of Denver’s community planning and development department, which provides all short and long-range planning along with managing all zoning, permitting, inspections, and historic preservation processes for the city. During every other spare minute, Brad and his family own and operate the Flying B Bar Ranch where they raise grass-fed cattle. Brad is trained as an architect, and was elected to the fellowship program in the American Institute of Architects in 2005 as one who has made a significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Neil Brenner is a critical urban theorist, sociologist, and geographer whose work opens new theories of urbanization with relevance across the social sciences, spatial humanities, design disciplines, and environmental studies. Here, Brenner joins 3CT co-director Shannon Lee Dawdy in conversation about his book, "New Urban Spaces: Urban Theory and the Scale Question," as well as his ongoing project on planetary urbanization. The urban condition is today being radically transformed. Urban restructuring is accelerating, new urban spaces are being consolidated, and new forms of urbanization are crystallizing across the planet. In his most recent book, New Urban Spaces: Urban Theory and the Scale Question (Oxford, 2019), Brenner argues that understanding these mutations of urban life requires not only concrete research, but new theories of urbanization. Neil Brenner is Lucy Flower Professor of Urban Sociology, Department of Sociology, University of Chicago. Brenner’s most recent books are New Urban Spaces: Urban Theory and the Scale Question (Oxford, 2019) and Critique of Urbanization: Selected Essays (Bauwelt Fundamente, 2016), as well as the edited volume Implosions/Explosions: Towards a Study of Planetary Urbanization (Jovis, 2014). He previously served as Professor of Urban Theory, Harvard GSD, and as Professor of Sociology and Metropolitan Studies, New York University. Presented by 3CT and co-sponsored by the Seminary Co-op Bookstores and the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation. Recorded January 28, 2021. World's first Urban Sun cleans public spaces of the coronavirus for better human gatherings. Inspired by the light of the sun, and backed by scientific research that proves a new, specific light can safely clean up to 99.9% of the coronavirus, Studio Roosegaarde launches Urban Sun. Daan Roosegaarde and his team of designers, external experts, and scientists challenged themselves to discover how the power of light can be used to combat viruses and therefore enhance our well-being. Research shows that though traditional 254nm UV light is harmful, the new far-UVC light with a wavelength of 222 nanometers can actually sanitize viruses safely. Urban Sun, a project in development by Studio Roosegaarde, shines a large circle of this far-UVC light into public spaces, cleaning those spaces of the coronavirus. It acts as an additional layer of protection to current government rules. Urban Sun aims to inspire hope. It combats the negative impact of social isolation by aiming to improve cultural gatherings, sporting events, public squares, and schoolyards. 🤍
