Introducing Pronouns | This video introduces pronouns by building upon the student’s prior knowledge of nouns and proper nouns. The video reexamines the process by which nouns and proper nouns act as the comprehension projected and received when reading and speaking. Subject pronouns are first introduced as replacements for nouns and proper nouns when speaking and writing. The act of replacing nouns and proper nouns with pronouns is demonstrated in single sentences. Building upon this concept, emphasis is placed on our need to use personal subject pronouns in order to eliminate the overuse of the nouns and proper nouns in our writing, thus making our writing less redundant and more clear for our readers. Simple paragraph revision using pronouns is demonstrated through voice over and video imagery. The video further highlights personal subject pronouns by providing a distinction between singular and plural subjects and the identification of which pronoun to use properly in a variety of scenarios for the writer. I’ve created an entire series of teaching videos to explain the components of English Language Arts in a way that connects them to each other and to real world reading, speaking, and writing. Pamela Ricard, a former math teacher in the Geary School District, recently won a $95,000 settlement from the school district after being unfairly punished for refusing to use a student’s preferred pronouns. Ricard, who is a Christian, stood her ground against the district and was suspended for three days back in March 2021. Despite threats of a blemish on her record and further disciplinary action, Ricard continued to refuse to betray her principles. As a result, the court that tried the case didn’t care for Ms. Ricard’s rights being trampled and ruled in her favor. Folks, it may take a little courage, but sometimes the good guys win. Gender Neutral Pronouns: They're Here, Get Used To Them

There are important corrections to this video. Visit here: 🤍 or pull down the description to read them. Original description: Grammatical gender is a silly concept. So I'm about to go against my vow of descriptivism, and risk being run over by the Linguistic Mafia's bus, and say this: it's a silly idea. CORRECTIONS March 9th, 2019 Back in 2013, I made a video about ‘singular they’ and gender-neutral pronouns. Looking back on it with half a decade of hindsight, there are several things I want to correct. I also have a few thoughts on how the reactions to it have changed over time, and why the video’s comments will remain off. Firstly, while editing the video, I cut the first sentence of the script. That sentence didn’t seem to add anything, and I’m a believer in ‘don’t bore us, get to the chorus’. That would have been fine — if only the script didn’t refer back to that first sentence later on, noting that the viewer probably didn’t notice the singular they in it. There used to be an annotation explaining that mistake, but YouTube’s deleted all annotations now. I regret the error. Secondly, I mentioned that recently-coined gender-neutral prounouns (hir, xe, etc) haven’t caught on in regular usage, and that trying to deliberately add new words into a language is extremely difficult. I think that’s true, but my tone was a bit too dismissive — there was an implied value judgment there. I’d rephrase that in a second video. And finally, I co-opted a couple of LGBT slogans, both in the title of the video and the video itself. Those aren’t my slogans to rewrite, and adding ‘with apologies to’ in the reference line isn’t a great way of solving that. Looking back, I’m uncomfortable with those. Changing times In 2013, the video was uncontroversial. You can see that in this chart of likes and dislikes over time from YouTube’s analytics tool: [graph available on 🤍 ] The video received very few dislikes until 2016. And I remember the comments from back then: those dislikes weren’t from angry conservative types. Instead, those were speakers of languages that used grammatical gender — they were angry that I’d insulted their language! But you can see the tide start to shift in 2016. This is why I turned off comments: it seems that a small number of people with limited empathy deliberately search out videos about subjects like this just so they can hit ‘dislike’, leave awful comments that are usually one of a few toxic in-jokes, and go. YouTube's moderation tools remain desperately inadequate at dealing with that problem without appointing full-time moderators, and frankly, that would be time and money that could be better spent on almost anything else. For that reason, the comments are going to remain off. If I were to remake this video in 2019, the most significant change would be focus: the title would be all about singular they, not gender-neutral pronouns. It probably wouldn’t even mention LGBT issues beyond a quick reference. It wouldn’t be a shout of hey, did you know about these folks, because five years later, most people watching the video do. Instead, it’d be a quiet nod of I see you. What worked for a 2013 audience doesn’t work in 2019. It seems that, over the last few years, non-binary and trans folks have reached stage three on the Williams Scale: ‘then they fight you’. Hopefully, it won't take long to reach stage four: ‘then you win’.

What are your pronouns? Fifty percent of Americans are uncomfortable asking this question but using gender-neutral pronouns and language can create inclusion and help deconstruct the gender binary. Based on interviews with gender diverse people, psychology professor calls for allyship by sharing ways we can act to create gender inclusive spaces and see each other more deeply. “Watch what you say.” “Be careful how you say it.” These phrases have even more of an impact today. 🤍 It is wrong to say "Her is cute". You must say "SHE is cute". Her, she, he and him are confusing in English. Ronnie's going to help you understand. Watch HER video and learn the differences. Never make mistakes with these pronouns again after you watch his grammar lesson! Take the quiz here: 🤍 TRANSCRIPT Hello. How are you? I'm very, very well. Thank you. My name is Ronnie. I'm going to teach you something very easy but a little bit confusing and difficult even if you have studied English or grammar for a while. I hear people make this mistake every day. Again, so this is what we're doing: when you should use "she" or "he" or "his" sorry "her" or "his". These are two words that a lot of people get confused. First of all, the thing or a mistake that a lot of people make is "she" and "he" which one's the girl? Which one's the boy? Most of you know that "she" is the girl, but when you speak, you mix it up, and you say, "My mom went to the store. He bought " what? He what? Your mom is a "he" now? What happened on the way to the store? Did something happen to your mom that changed it into a "he"? So be careful. "She" is a girl; "he" is a boy. Now, this is the trick. You will remember this forever if you get this. "She" or "he" going to be followed by a verb, okay? So subject + verb. "She" or "he". So "she likes", "he hates", and then, if you want to, you're going to write a noun, or you're going to say a noun. For example, "She likes chickens." "He hates apricots. He doesn't like them at all." So when you use "she" or "he", it's always going to be followed by a verb. When we use "her" or "his", it's going to be followed by a noun because it is a possessive pronoun. So I can say, "her dog" because "dog" is a noun. Or I can say "his chicken". Then, usually, I would use a verb. For example, "Her dog is cute", or "his chicken let's say we put an S his chickens are these are your verbs. Uh-oh sexy!" Sexy chicken time! So if you need to remember, "Oh, my God. Do I say do I say 'her' or 'his' or 'she' or 'he'?" Just remember: "she" or "he" plus the verb any verb you want, and "her" or "his" plus a noun. If you can remember these two very simple things for English grammar, you're going to be, "Hallelujah, Ronnie. You saved my life." You're welcome. Stay tuned. Go to 🤍engvid.com for a quiz on "she", "he", "his", and "hers". 'Til then.

Transcript: Hi and welcome back to our series of lessons on the parts of speech, my name is Ganesh and this lesson is all about pronouns. Now pronouns are a huge topic, there are many different types of pronouns and there are a lot of grammar points relating to pronouns so in this lesson we're going to focus on the most important types of pronouns and on how to avoid common mistakes that people make with them. We will start by talking about personal pronouns then we'll move onto reflexive pronouns and then we'll look at indefinite pronouns and finally we'll turn to interrogative pronouns. Now if these names sound scary don't worry, by the end of this lesson you will understand all of them and you'll know how to use them correctly. Before we begin just remember if you have any questions at all just let me know in the comments section below and I'll talk to you there. OK so first of all what is a pronoun? A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun in a sentence. Replaces means it takes the place of a noun. For example consider these sentences Corey works with Paige. Cory likes working with Paige. Corey and Paige do many projects together. Of course that sounds very repetitive because we keep saying Corey and Paige. So can you tell me how you would improve the sentence? You can say he likes working with her, They do many projects together. That sounds much more natural because we're using the pronouns he, her and they in the place of nouns. And that type of pronoun - pronouns that talk about people are called personal pronouns because they refer to persons even though the pronoun it is considered a personal pronoun. Now personal pronouns come in three types - subject, object and possessive pronouns. A subject pronoun is used in the place of a subject in a sentence. For example in this sentence, I saw Lily yesterday - Here which is the pronoun? The pronoun is I and it's a subject pronoun because I do the action and you can replace that with any other subject pronoun. You can say we saw Lilly yesterday or he saw Lilly yesterday etc. An object pronoun is used in the object position in a sentence. For example Lily saw them yesterday. Here them is an object pronoun and you could use any other object pronoun in that place. So what do possessive pronouns do? Possessive pronouns show possession - that means they show that you have something. For example if I said this is our house the pronoun our shows that this house belongs to me and my family for example. I could also say this house is ours That means the same thing. Now all of these - the whole group of personal pronouns are actually very simple and I'm sure you use them correctly most of the time but there are two areas where people commonly make mistakes with them. The first is in using the pronouns I and me. Of course those are the simplest but those are also where a very common error occurs and that is when combining I or me with another noun or a pronoun. For example we know that Cory and Paige work together but let's say that Corey wants to say this sentence I have four options on the screen and I would like you to tell me which is the correct way to say it - I and Paige work together, Paige and I work together, Me and Paige work together or Page and me work together - which is correct? Well here we need an object pronoun so we cannot use me. Between the first two options the first option is grammatically correct but the best way to say this is Page and I work together. That is because when you put the other person first it's more respectful and in English it's considered more polite so Paige and I work together is the best way. Now instead of Paige you could use any noun.
