The University of North Florida in Jacksonville is a great public university with hundreds of opportunities to get a great education and boost your professional network, all the while enjoying the college experience and making memories that will last a lifetime. *baby SWOOP* This video breaks down some of the "softer" deciding factors when it comes to finding a good college fit - things that will come down primarily to preference. As you can probably tell, I've enjoyed my time at UNF, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. So, If you are currently in the process of shopping for a college, I highly recommend you book a campus tour at UNF, where you can see inside of the academics buildings, get a taste for student life, and also get a dorm tour. This weekend wasn't too hectic with school work, so I figured I'd vlog. Struggling with shoulder pain? Let's take a look at what causes it. The first contributor is the muscle imbalances around your shoulder created as a result of spending a lot of time sedentary in poor positions. The second is what you do during your workouts, where you neglect the rotator cuff and scapular muscles. Combine these two, and shoulder impingement can occur. This can then lead to shoulder pain, especially when lifting your arm overhead or behind your back. The key to shoulder impingement treatment (or preventing this), and just keeping your shoulders healthy in general is quite simple. All it takes is 2 easy steps (that involve exercises and stretches) for some much-needed shoulder pain relief. The first step for shoulder impingement treatment is to create more space in your shoulder joint to relieve the pinching on your tendon and the pain that you’re feeling. To do so, we need to activate the various muscles you’ve been neglecting and have weakened overtime. The first muscle, the lower traps, can easily be activated and strengthened with a simple bodyweight progression. Level 1 involves first lifting your chest off the ground slightly by using your mid back muscles, raising your arms up while turning your palms out, and then pulling your shoulder blades back and down as these are the two main functions of the lower traps. Hold this position for 10 seconds and then repeat for more reps. Move to the other progressions once you’re ready. The next thing you want to do to relieve shoulder pain is to strengthen the serratus anterior. We’re going to first focus on activating it. First, assume a wall plank position with your forearms on the wall. Then, think about pulling your shoulder blades down and around your ribs by pushing away from the wall with your forearms. Hold this for 20-30 seconds and then repeat for more reps. Lastly, to strengthen the external rotators, we’ll perform the side lying external rotation. Simple rotate your arm upwards while keeping your elbow pinned to the side. The next step is to address the root cause of your shoulder impingement, which lie in the various mobility restrictions that were created from a sedentary lifestyle. The two most problematic areas we’ll want to look at are the pecs and the mid-back. When the pecs are tight, they pull our shoulder into this forward rounded position. To help mobilize them, , all you need is a wall or something to prop your elbow against. Keep your elbow at 90 degrees, brace your core, and then lunge forward gently until you feel a stretch in your pecs. Then, slide your arm up and down slowly to stretch out the different fibres and muscles of your chest. Do this for 30-60 seconds and then switch sides. We’ll then work on the mid-back to continue addressing your shoulder impingement issue with a thoracic extension move. To perform this movement, place your elbows on top of a bench or couch with your hands together. Sit your hips back into your heels and simultaneously drop your chest towards the ground. Hold that bottom position for a few deep breaths before repeating for more reps. So, as a summary, here’s list of corrective exercises that you’ll want to run through for shoulder pain relief. Do this 2-3 times a day initially. Part 1: Lower Traps Exercise Progression: 10 reps with 5-10s pause at top Serratus Anterior Wall Exercise: 5 reps with 20-30 second holds (progress to sliding version) Side Lying External Rotation: 15-20 reps (progress to raising arm version) Part 2: Pec Stretch: 5-10 reps sliding up/down wall each arm Thoracic Extensions: 10 reps with 2s pause at bottom By implementing these two parts, you’ll be able to not only quickly relieve your shoulder but will also be addressing the root cause of the problem. It may sound tedious, but you won’t need to do these every single day indefinitely. If you choose the right exercises to include in your workouts, while making an effort to move more and be mindful of your posture throughout the day, you’ll be able to keep these muscles strengthened and prevent imbalances from occurring without having to do a ton of different corrective exercises every day. Do you experience hip shifting during your execution of the squat? Or...when standing, have you noticed that one of your hips is higher than the other? In most cases, uneven hips occurs when you have muscular imbalances that you’ve developed from lifting or doing any kind of repetitive task. Various asymmetries in the body are expected and perfectly normal. But when your uneven hips (e.g. left hip higher than right or hip shift) starts to cause back pain, hip pain, discomfort, or affect your lifts, then it can start to create problems. Today, I’m going to show you 3 tests that’ll determine if you currently have hip asymmetry. I’ll also give you an exercise program (covering various hip exercises and hip stretches to correct uneven hips) that focuses on strengthening weak structures and mobilizing tight structures to fix your uneven hips – that you can do at home. For the first uneven hips test, stand in front of a mirror and palpate the top of your hip bones and orient your hands flat to the floor. If one hand sits higher than the other, then you may be positive for an unevenness in hip height. For the second test, again stand in front of the mirror or better yet, take a video from behind you. Then, raise one leg so that your foot is off the ground. Hold this position for 30 seconds. Repeat this test on the other side. If the pelvis of the raised leg drops and the trunk muscles flex towards your planted leg, then that would indicate a positive for the Trendelenburg sign. For test 3, we’re going to assess your hip symmetry when lifting. Next time you squat, look in the mirror and pay attention to your hips as they come up from the bottom. What some of you might notice is hip shifting during the squat. Sometimes this is caused by a strength imbalance where you preferentially shift towards your stronger hip. In other cases this is caused by a side to side hip mobility imbalance, specifically with external rotation. Now, we’re going to dive into a simple yet effective 2 step plan (mobilize → strengthen) that you can start incorporating right away to fix uneven hips – even at home. Step 1 is all about mobility. The first exercise focuses on the hips with what’s known as the 90/90 drill. The second exercise is called “The Teapot”. Step 2, strengthening, is arguably the most important step. To do so, we’ll use a progression going from 2 easier uneven hips exercises in level 1 to 2 more difficult ones in level 2 for you to move onto once ready. The first exercise in level 1 is the hip drop, which will work your glute medius isometrically as they stabilize the hips. The next exercise of this level is the side lying hip abduction, or what I like to call the “Jane Fonda”. Once you’ve mastered level 1 and your strength improves, you can move onto level 2. The first exercise we’ll use here is something called hip airplanes. The second exercise of this level, the RNT squat, helps tie everything together functionally and is especially helpful if you tested positive for hip shift when squatting. Now let’s put this all together for you into a simple yet effective 10-minute corrective routine that’ll help address any uneven hip issues (e.g. left hip higher than right) – which could cause back pain. Hip Mobility 1. 90/90 drill - 3 sets of 10 reps 2. QL stretch - 3 sets of 10 Hip Strengthening Progression Level 1 1. Hip Drop - 3 sets of 8-10 reps 2. Jane Fonda - 3 sets of 8-10 reps Hip Strengthening Progression Level 2 1. Hip Airplanes (Assisted to Less Assisted) - 3 sets of 3-5 reps 2. RNT Squat - 3 sets of 6-8 reps (on affected side) Perform the 4 exercises for whatever level you’re on in order and as a routine at least 2-3 times a week. After you’ve used this routine for a little while, it’s important to re-test your hip balance using whichever test you failed on to see if there have been any improvements. Then, once your asymmetries have been significantly improved, you won’t need to do these exercises as often but should still incorporate some of them into your weekly routine while just making an effort to get off your butt and move more in general! But overall, it’s important to pay attention to often neglected muscles like the ones I went through in this video to prevent potential imbalances and injuries from creeping up later on down the road.
