Let’s examine the new Arduino IDE 2.0 (Release Candidate 3) and see what’s new, what works, and what still needs work! As with its predecessor, it allows you to write sketches for microcontrollers made by Arduino and can be extended using the Boards Manager to use other manufacturers’ microcontrollers as well. This new IDE features a sleek new design with a choice of Dark or Light modes, an improved Serial Plotter, and an integrated real-time debugger. It also adds features like code completion, and it integrates with the Arduino IoT Cloud to allow you to edit both your local and cloud-based sketches in one place. The product has been in development for a couple of years now, and it finally made it to the Release Candidate version at the end of 2021. I’m examining Release candidate 3, which was released on January 11, 2022. As with all release candidates, there are still a few bugs to be ironed out, and I’ll show you a couple of them in this video, along with some workarounds. If you’re viewing this in the future, then some of these bugs will likely be fixed. By the end of this lesson, you'll have an idea of which one's gonna be the best fit for what you need to do. You know, when you're just getting into Arduino, there's a lot to learn. It's simple to download, you just pick your operating system on the right-hand side, it'll start a download. You go through the installation steps and it'll open up. These are the most current stable versions, right here. Now, if you wanted to get a previous version, you can click here and you can get a bunch of the previous versions, or if you wanna get the absolute hot off the press, newest version of this IDE, then you can download it here. Now they're still maintaining the original Arduino IDE. So this is gonna be the most recent updated features and bug fixes of the original Arduino IDE. So the original Arduino IDE looks like this. Right here, it looks like a kind of a text editor. Now, if you've been into software development for awhile, this might look a little rinky-dink to you. There's really not a lot going on. Like, there's not buttons everywhere to have like 10 million preferences and, there's really not much like code highlighting or anything like that. There's no auto-complete. There's not a lot of anything. It's like very much just a trimmed down text editor. You know, you just put in your code and run it. You know, like one, two, three, four, there's like five buttons up here. So it's just a really simple editor. And it hasn't changed much, like the appearance of it hasn't changed much in a long time. And that is one of its biggest features, I think. That it's super simple. And I think that's one of its best features actually, is that it is super simple. Especially if you're new to programming, sometimes trying to figure out what an IDE can do and how it works, can get really confusing. So what the heck is this thing called Arduino? Well, Arduino is a tool that helps you control electronic stuff with code. So if you're building a house, you'd probably go grab a hammer. Well, if you're gonna build a project using electronic stuff, grab yourself an Arduino. But what do I mean exactly by electronic stuff? Well, let's make two big general groups. Inputs and outputs. Inputs are devices that gather information, and outputs are devices that have some action in the world. So for inputs, think of things, like temperature sensors, light sensors, touch sensors, flex sensors, humidity sensors, infrared sensor, distance sensors. Just to name a few. Then you have things like outputs. DC motors, stepper motors, servo motors, LEDs, LED strips, buzzers, speakers, LCD displays, OLED displays. The list goes on. What Arduino can do is stand in the middle of these input and output devices and control them with some cool logic that you get to create. So Arduino can be used to read inputs and control outputs. Okay. So now you have a general idea of what Arduino is. It's a tool to control electronic stuff. Great! Okay. But how do you actually get started using Arduino? What do you have to do? So here's what you're gonna need. We're gonna talk about the big three. It's what I like to call the Arduino trifecta. You've got Arduino hardware, the Arduino IDE, and the actual Arduino code that you're gonna need to write. So first, we have the physical component of Arduino, which is called an Arduino board. There's a bunch of different types of Arduino boards out there. When someone says Arduino board, it could mean a number of these different circuit boards. In just a little bit, I'm gonna tell you exactly which one to go by if you haven't purchased one yet. And here's some quick good news. If you have bought one already, it's probably gonna work just fine. Now, all Arduino boards share one thing in common. They have a microcontroller on them. A microcontroller is basically a really small computer. So when you use an Arduino, you're really just using a microcontroller. The microcontroller is what enables us to read those different inputs and control those outputs. So again, when somebody says Arduino board, they're talking about something physical... The Arduino IDE v2 is the new official IDE, the 1.8 versions are from now on legacy. This means that the Arduino team must be pretty confident about the new IDE. Version 2 of the IDE looks quite similar to version v1.8. Its main differences seem to be its new looks with a menu bar on the side, a debug interface, autocomplete, and more sophisticated search functions. Also, boards are detected automatically and different IDE windows can compile for different boards without interfering with each other. The RP2040 (found in the Raspberry Pi Pico), the ESP32, and the ESP32-S3 are all dual-core microcontrollers, with two CPU cores. All three can be programmed using the Arduino IDE. The Pico W has the same pinout and form factor as the original Pico and has WiFi capabilities. Raspberry Pi also released a new UF2 file and several samples using microPython with the new WiFi chip. However, although they did release a C SDK, there was no update to the Arduino IDE for the new microcontroller. But you CAN use the Pico W with the Arduino IDE by using a new boards manager file that covers virtually every RP2040-based board. And today, I’ll show you how to install that for the classic Arduino IDE 1.8 and the newer IDE 2.0. After installing the new boards manager, we’ll give it a test. Then we’ll see how we can use the new WiFi features to control LEDs and servo motors with a web-based interface.
